Wanted: The Perfect Pet

Wanted: The Perfect Pet is a picture book written and illustrated by Fiona Roberton. The first connection I found was a text to self-connection. The main character of the story Henry reminds me of myself. I’ve always wanted to get a dog just like the character in the story. The second connection I found was another text to self-connection. The part where Henry puts up wanted posters for the perfect pet reminds me of when I walk home and see tons of wanted posters for missing dogs on electrical posts. The third connection I found was a text to media connection. The parts where Henry is talking about the advantages of a certain pet reminds me of youtube videos saying why this animal is the best pet. The fourth connection I found was a text to self-connection the part where Henry was talking about how ducks can pick up things from the bottom of the pool and reminded me of when I dropped my goggles at the bottom of the pool in the west van community center.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” is a picture book written by Kamkwamba and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon.

The first connection I found in the story was a text to self-connection. The part where he creates the first windmill to create electricity. This reminds me of when our class had to learn about clean energy and we did a google slides about them, I chose to do wind power.

The second connection I found in the story was a text to self-connection. The part where it says people are laughing at his invention. This part reminds me of another picture book blog that we did where the women were trying to plant more trees in Africa and the government are laughing and mocking them like people did in the story to the boy.  The third connection I found in the story was a text to world connection. The part where the boy’s family had to take him out of school and can only make 1 meal a day for them. This reminds me of all of the news articles saying how Africa is in poverty and many people can’t afford many things.

Do Cell Phones Belong in School?

The article was about how cell phones can provide lots of advantages in school but also a lot of disadvantages. The article talks about how having a cell phone can affect how you do in school and how social you are. The article also talks about how some educators think cell phones are useful in class and some just think it is a distraction.

1. Some of the benefits of using a cellphone in class are that they can record different experiments like in ADST and Science. Another benefit is that they can use it to research different topics on their phone and can create fake social media accounts for projects, for example, make Alfred Wegner talk to Harold Hess talk to each other on twitter. Some drawbacks of using cellphones in school are that the students can become easily distracted if allowed to use in the middle of class and may not pay attention to the speaker and may just be on their phone all the time. Another drawback is that if the students are up on their phone late, studies show that it can cause underachievement at school and depression.

3. Some predictions I can make about the future of cellphone technology is that cellphones will get smaller and smaller with more advanced technology in then and can be easily carried around places. Some predictions I have about cellphone use in education is that when more features and more advanced technology will be in phones will be used in schools and can add to the experience in school with the new use of technology.

“After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty got back up again”

“After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty got back up again” is a picture book written and illustrated by Dan Santat. The story is about Humpty Dumpty after he fell off of the wall. After that, he was really scared of heights. He spent a lot of time making paper planes and wanted to use them. He brought up all of his courage and climbed up the wall. Then he became a bird and flew away.

My first connection was a text to text connection. Of course, this story reminds me of the original Humpty Dumpty story I’ve heard as a small kid. My third connection was a text to world connection. The wall that Humpty Dumpty fell off of reminds me of the Berlin wall. My fourth connection was a text to media connection. When Humpty Dumpty says that he is a famous egg it reminds me of the world record egg. It is an egg that got the most likes ever on Instagram and it world famous.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art

“The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art” is a picture book written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary GrandPre. There are many connections I found in this story.

My second connection is a text to self-connection. The part where the boy is painting reminds me of two things that have happened to me. The first was when I went to a summer camp all about art and painted all the time. The second was when I asked my mom for an easel to paint on and painted for hours and hours. Another text to self-connection was the part at the end of the book where they are stating facts about Kandinsky and that some of his art is at an art museum in New York and reminded me of all of the art and paintings I saw in art museums in New York. My third connection is a text to world connection. In the story when the boy created abstract art it reminded me of all of the famous abstract paintings in the world, all in museums.

There

“There” is a picture book written and illustrated by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick.

The first connection I found in the story was a text to text connection. I have read a book a while ago when I was younger that had a similar metaphor. The second connection I found in the story was a text to self-connection. The part where she says: “when will I get there” reminds me of when I was in the car as a small child always asking are we there yet. The third connection I found in the story was a text to world connection. Reminds me of people and/or the world wondering about its future. The part where the child is wondering when she will get there and what will happen. The fourth connection I found in the story was a text to media connection. The part where she is wondering what will happen when I get there reminds me of when Donald Trump started building the wall and many people are wondering what is going to happen without imports of avocados and other things from Mexico.

Wangari’s Trees Of Peace: A True Story From Africa

A text to self-connection I’ve found in the story is when everyone starts growing back the trees. This reminds me of when my neighbours wanted to cut down a tree in our yard because it was blocking the view. Before it looked like the tree wouldn’t grow back but after a while, the tree started to grow back its branches.Another text to self-connection I’ve found in the story is when the women started growing trees again and food started growing out of the soil. This reminds me of when I was young and wanted to grow our own food in the backyard, we bought seeds but we forgot to plant them.

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau Connections

A text to self connection I found in the story was when they were talking about litter in the ocean and reminded me of when we were learning about litter in the ocean in grade 6 and when we were designing machines to remove litter from the ocean. Another text to self connection I found in the story is when Jacques gets into a car accident and the doctor says he has to wear arm bracelets. This reminds me if when my dad got into a motorcycle accident and had to wear a knee brace. A text to world connection I found in the story is also about the litter they were talking about in the ocean and reminded me of all the pollution that is happening in the world. A text to media connection I found in the story is when Jacques wanted to share the beauty of the sea and reminded me of how popping the visuals were when I first watched “Finding Nemo”.

Enemy Pie Connections

“Enemy Pie” is a picture book written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Callahan King. The story is about a boy who has an enemy and gets his dad to make “enemy pie”. He is told by his dad that the only way enemy pie will work is if the boy spends a day with his enemy, the boy spends a day with his enemy and ends up becoming friends with his enemy. When his enemy (now his friend) tries to eat the enemy pie the boy tries to make his friend not eat the pie and stops him because he thinks the pie will do something bad to his new friend and he doesn’t want that to happen. The first connection I noticed is a text to text connection and reminds me of the Ugly Duckling. It reminds me of the Ugly Duckling because the moral of the story is mostly the same, don’t judge people by their first impressions because once you get to know them you will realize they are actually a good person. The second connection I noticed is a text to self-connection and reminds me of when I went over to Francesco’s house when we were in kindergarten or grade 1. It reminds me of me and Francesco because at the end of the story the boy and his friend sit around a table and eat a nice meal that his dad has made and reminds me of when I and Francesco ate some pizza that his dad cooked. Those were some connections I found in the book “Enemy Pie” and a summary of the story.

“Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi, a Math adventure”

“Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi” is a math picture book written by Cindy Neuschwander and illustrated by Wayne Geehan. The story starts with the father of Radius having a stomach ache. Radius goes to the doctor to see if he had anything to cure his father’s stomach ache. The doctor wasn’t there but he found a potion that he thought would cure his father. Radius gave it to his father but his father turned into a dragon! The castle guards in the castle had seen the smoke from his father breathing fire. The guards said they needed to “vanquish the beast”. Radius went to his mother and told her that his father had turned into a dragon and that he was going to be slain tonight. Radius went to go see if the doctor had any potions that could cure his father. Radius found a potion with a poem on it that he thinks can cure his father. Radius went to the workshop to visit the Geo of Metry to try and find the magic number to help his father. Geo of Metry gave Radius a hint to what he needed to do and Radius rushed out. Next radius went to visit Lady Fingers and she asked the Radius to help her finish the last pie. Radius got another hint to what he needed to do and ran out again. Radius knew the magic number was greater than 3 but didn’t know exactly. Radius used Geo of Metry’s measuring tape and found out that the circumference of a circle was always 3 1/7 times the length across. Radius was running back to the doctor’s office and saw his mother coming towards him. His mother told him that she could not find the doctor anywhere. Radius said that he knew the magic number and then radius went to the doctor’s workroom to get the cure. Radius fell asleep with the cure and when he woke up he thought to himself he needed to rush. Radius measured his father in the shape of a circle and found out his diameter and then his circumference. The knights had arrived and they ran. They cured his father and Cir Cumference went back and everything was normal again. I don’t think there is a theme to the story, someone just made a book using a bunch of math terms and made it fun for kids. I think that this book is directed to kids just starting to learn about circles and all about their circumferences, diameters and radii (plural for radius). I would rate this book 2 out of 5. I didn’t really enjoy the book just I think other people might have, I just don’t find many parts of the book interesting.
